XProtect Comparison Chart: Milestone XProtect has several products, each of which is most easily classified by the number of cameras and number of servers. Note that XProtect Essential+ requires license renewal annually, and Pro+ is the minimum if Edge recording (to the camera's built-in storage) is desired.

XProtect System Requirements: Be sure to check the system requirements to ensure your server hardware is compatible.

XProtect Compatibility List: Be sure to check the compatibility list to ensure your IP cameras and/or encoders are compatible. A growing number of IP cameras are now Onvif-conformant, which means even if the camera's make and model is not specifically listed as compatible, it's very likely that it can record using Onvif. But that does not always guarantee that all of the camera's features are compatible with the VMS.

Some of the features to check for an Onvif camera including the following:

• AI features such as human or vehicle object classification.
• Recording with one or more particular types of CODECs (H.265, H.264, MPEG4, MJPEG). Note: a camera will likely not record at H.265 unless H.265 is stated on the XProtect Compatibility list.
• Motion detection recording
• Physical camera movement if using a PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom), or any type of camera which performs any pan or zoom movements.
• Dewarping of lens in a fisheye camera. Note: many brands have a plugin for fisheye dewarping, and most newer versions of Milestone can dewarp any fisheye camera.
